I have finished up a marathon week of teaching at Bryn Athyn College: 30 hours of watercolor instruction and painting. The students were outstanding: open to new ideas and ready to buckle down and really cover the basics, and launch into a lifelong pursuit of the ultimate watercolor painting. The last thing we did, after a pop up showing of their work at the local cafe, was an interesting art therapy game/exercise. It is a silent process. Everyone takes turns making marks on a central paper. In other words, the group is communicating in the language of art: color, line, shape. In this case, the "conversation" was a beautiful collaboration of the creation of a work of art with no one taking over, no one hesitating to participate, and everyone thinking along the same lines. Several times someone was planning to make a mark in a certain color in a certain place, but the person before them did that exact thing! It shows that there can be a group mentality about the progress of art, and that there is something inside of all of us that understands the language of art. It is all a matter of putting aside prejudice about what art should be. A perfect ending to a hard week of uphill learning, and triumph over technique.

Wendy, I had such a great time. A real challenge for me and my letting my brain allow art to get in. Thank you for sharing your wonderful wisdom.

"something inside all of us that understands the language of art." Exquisite expression of the heart connection that is free of words. Thank you!
