I am catching up with my surroundings, things are falling into place. I have a plan and am ready to move forward. Next week I plant myself as artist in resident at the Be Well Cafe to explain to potential students what the workshop and classes are going to be like. Several hundred postcards, numerous emails and websites are not always enough to get a potential artist to be brave enough to sign up for a 30 hour week of classes in which they are afraid they will be humiliated when they find out they are not "artistic". It is my job to point out that it is all a learning process like any other: like learning a language or how a computer works. IF you put in the time and attention, the teacher is responsible for the student learning. Of course most people have had terrible past experiences with at least one teacher and often an art teacher who told them they were not talented. For me it was a music teacher who told me I could not sing, and it sticks with me to today. This is work I love to do, always loving the challenge of breaking through the fear to help someone follow the steps to becoming competent in skills, and hopefully, confident in their ability to grow as an artist. Let the work begin! |
