Back in 1968, me and my cousin Grant were squirming to be released from the bounds of our senior year at a cloistered little private high school. We both had artistic and rebellious leanings: he in his punkish band Argyle Sweat Socks that played songs like Big Leg Emma, and me with a calling to follow the hippie, artist trail around the exciting country that was bubbling with art and rebellion. Almost fifty years later, I am in his Arts and Crafts style Inn in the Poconos enjoying his kitchen's locally sourced and private garden fed meal with my sister. The little town of Hawley, Pennsylvania has been transformed by the efforts of Grant: two beautiful hotels, a college and health care center for the locals, hipster coffee shop, grocery for local farmers, and several art galleries. I keep thinking of the story of "It's a Wonderful Life" and the idea of what this area of the state would have been like without Grant's many projects that fueled the local economy. Makes me wonder what I have been doing with my life! We will have a class reunion soon and we can all come back and compare notes. I will have to face up to the fact that most of my life has been devoted to teaching thousands of students who all eventually leave me, with me wondering if I taught them anything. No real estate or fame: but the satisfaction of having done what I love to do for decades. If you are in the area, go to the Settlers Inn and appreciate what one ex-Argyle Sweat Sox kid did with his life. /thesettlersinn.com
