If you have a career you love but can't imagine doing it full time forever, you would be lucky to be able to negotiate a deal with your employer to fine tune the time and type of activity you want to limit yourself to. My friend Peggy and Dorothy were able to do this. A nurse and a professor, they somehow each were able to negotiate continuing their careers with more choices about time and activities. Dorothy didn’t want so many faculty meetings but loved the social work aspect of supporting legislation to help the unfortunate, leading grad students along the way. She seems to be able to control her hours pretty well too. Peg signs up for specific days of work when she wants and can pick the cases she works on. This leaves lots of time for the other things she loves doing. Many people fear that their workplace would not be open to part time arrangements and fear they will be fired or replaced if they even bring it up. My sister Soni would say: why not try? come up with a plan they can’t say no to. And if they do, start looking for a new reFIREment career that better suits your needs. Knowing what you have to offer, which might take some work to understand and appreciate, can fuel headway into a great life. |
